Psychiatric Medication Management in Cincinnati

You're ready for real help. You've been trying to find a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner in the Cincinnati area who actually gets it. But so far, it’s been one disappointment after another.

Perhaps your last provider spent barely ten minutes with you before writing a prescription and rushing you out the door—never once asking about your sleep, nutrition, stress levels, or what actually matters most to you. You left feeling like just another number, not a person.

Or maybe it took months just to get that disappointing appointment. You called and left messages over and over, wondering if anyone would ever call you back. When you're struggling with your mental health, waiting that long for help isn't just frustrating—it can feel hopeless.

Maybe your provider only offered telehealth appointments when what you really needed was to sit across from someone in person, to feel that human connection that's so hard to find through a screen.

Or perhaps you were prescribed medications that simply didn't work—or made you feel worse. Uncomfortable side effects that nobody warned you about left you wondering if you should stop taking them or push through, with no guidance on what to do next.

And maybe worst of all, that nagging sense that something's missing—that your provider doesn't quite understand what you're going through, or that your concerns aren't being fully heard. You want to feel a real connection with your provider, not just like they're checking boxes.

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone—and you deserve so much better.

You’re not a diagnosis to be medicated. You’re a whole person who deserves to be heard, understood, and treated with care.

What Makes Our Psychiatric Medication Management Different

We Actually Talk with You

  • Your initial evaluation lasts a full hour—not the ten-minute rush you may have experienced elsewhere. Our providers take the time to understand your full story: your mental health history, medications you’ve tried, lifestyle, stressors, and treatment goals.

  • Follow-up sessions (20–30 minutes) give you space to share how you’re doing, discuss side effects, and make adjustments together. It’s a real conversation, not a quick transaction.

An Integrative, Functional Approach to Mental Health

  • We don’t just throw pills at problems. We use a holistic, functional medicine approach that considers sleep, nutrition, exercise, and underlying biological factors. Lab work, supplements, and therapy coordination help create a full picture of your mental health.

  • When you’re also working with a therapist, Taylor and Cara collaborate to ensure your care is aligned. This team-based, whole-person approach leads to better long-term outcomes.

You Can Get an Appointment Quickly

  • Most new patients are seen within one week or less. We know that waiting weeks or months for help can make symptoms worse. Whether you’re facing depression, anxiety, postpartum changes, or burnout, you deserve timely support.

Schedule Right on Our Website

  • No more phone tag. You can schedule your appointment 24/7 directly through our website—choose your time, confirm, and you’re all set.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medication Management

Therapy Cincinnati's medication management services are provided by Taylor Hausfeld, PMHNP-BC, and Cara Mueller, PMHNP-BC — two providers who actually take time with you and treat the whole picture, not just the symptom list.

What is psychiatric medication management?

It's more than getting a prescription. Medication management means someone is actively paying attention — checking in on how you're feeling, adjusting things when they're not working, and making sure what you're taking is actually helping. At our Montgomery, Ohio practice, our PMHNPs meet with you regularly so nothing just gets set and forgotten.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a PMHNP?

Both can diagnose and prescribe. The difference you'll usually notice is in how appointments actually feel. PMHNPs tend to spend more time with you, ask about more than just your symptoms, and think about your mental health in the context of your whole life. At Therapy Cincinnati, they also work directly with your therapist — so your care isn't happening in two separate silos.

Do I need both therapy and medication?

Not necessarily — but a lot of people do better when both are part of the picture. Medication can make it easier to actually engage in therapy. Therapy can help you build skills that outlast the medication. Because we offer both under one roof, your PMHNP and therapist can actually talk to each other about your progress, which makes a real difference.

How long will I need medication for?

Honestly, it depends — and it's not something you decide once and never revisit. Some people use medication to get through a specific hard stretch and then taper off. Others find that longer-term management is just part of how they take care of themselves, and that's okay too. Our PMHNPs check in on this question regularly so the plan stays current with where you actually are — not where you were when you first came in.

What if nothing has worked before?

That's frustrating, and it's also really common. However, it doesn't mean you're out of options. Our PMHNPs dig into what you've tried — what doses, for how long, what the side effects were — and look at factors that might not have been on anyone's radar before, like sleep, hormones, or how your body actually processes certain medications. We also offer genetic testing that can take some of the guesswork out of finding what works.

Will medication change my personality?

No — that's not what it's supposed to do. When the right medication is working, most people say they feel more like themselves: clearer, less stuck, more able to show up for their life. If you ever feel flat or unlike yourself, that matters and we want to know about it.

What about side effects?

Your PMHNP will walk you through what to expect before you start anything. Most side effects are mild and fade within the first few weeks — but if something doesn't feel right, we adjust. You're not just handed a prescription and left to figure it out.

How do I get started?

You can schedule an initial appointment by clicking on the “Get Started” button below. Your first visit is an intake — usually about an hour — where your PMHNP gets to know your history, what you've tried before, what's working, and what isn't. If you're already seeing a therapist here, they'll loop in from the start.
