PTSD and Trauma Treatment

If you are here, something has turned your life (or the life of someone you love) upside down. Maybe it was a sexual assault or some other kind of trauma–something easy to pinpoint. Or maybe you know some bad things happened, but can’t understand why you can’t just get over it.

Often my clients:

  • feel numb and disconnected from their body
  • feel jumpy and on edge – like they can’t let down their guard.
  • feel they have to constantly keep busy so that “those” thoughts don’t creep back into their mind.
  • wonder if they will always feel unlovable and broken.
  • struggle with feelings of guilt.

Everything feels different now. It’s hard to recognize the person you or your loved one sees in the mirror.

Getting help is scary.

I’m here for you.

Maybe you or the person you love has been able to numb out or “pretend normal” for a while. The problem is, neglect, abuse and other traumas are experiences that act like a poison until they are healed. Your body, your relationships, and/or your ability to do life in any functional way will take the toll. But you don’t have to live this way.

I believe the greatest revenge of whoever hurt you is to heal fully and live a life that fills you up. You have come to the right place.

I understand how hard it is to talk about what happened. (The type of therapy I use to treat trauma does not require you to tell me anything about what happened). I understand you feel like some or all of what happened is your fault. I’m here to help you, your child, and/or your friend to learn how to heal, recognize your own strength, and rebuild your lives stronger than ever. Counseling for sexual assaults and any other type of trauma should be helpful and transformative.

Many of my clients have tried therapy before. Maybe it didn’t work at all or only seemed to work for a bit. I take the healing process a step further by using multiple cutting edge types of therapy that are proven to help people move past trauma. I want you to take back your life. I want you to find your confidence and excitement for life.

Evidence-based treatment

Both trauma therapists and clients alike have found that talk therapy is relatively ineffective for treating PTSD and related symptoms. The traumatic experience lingers in the body and nervous system. What trauma survivors need is to re-process past traumatic experiences in a healthy way.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been shown to be effective in helping clients re-process past traumatic events.

EMDR goes beyond talking, and allows the body and nervous system to re-learn, re-process and resolve. The outcome of EMDR is a release of intense emotions, unhelpful beliefs, and physical sensations associated with traumatic events.

Beyond EMDR therapy

Not everyone with anxiety and/or depression is suffering from classic symptoms of PTSD, or needs an intense therapeutic treatment such as EMDR.

If EMDR is not for you, there are other approaches available to help with issues such as anxiety, panic or depression. Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Psychodrama are also effective forms of therapy. It is important to find the therapeutic process that you are comfortable with. Individualized treatment plans are essential for the success of therapy.
